Court throws out Busola Dakolo’s case, exonerates Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Court 12 sitting at Bwari dismissed the case filed by Busola Dakolo and exonerated Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo.
This came after Fatoyinbo filed an Objection and an affidavit at the Court reiterating that Busola’s statements were false and concocted to embarrass, scandalise and ridicule Fatoyinbo.
He averred that from the inception she sought the attention of the media and press, and brought the civil action even while the Police investigation was ongoing. Her false claim were stale and an abuse of judicial process.
The court held that the matter amounts to injustice, and an abuse of judicial process and held that the case is purely sentimental, empty. The court awarded costs of N1,000,000 against Busola Dakolo and held that it would have been 10 times more but resisted it because there are women with legitimate claims who may approach the court.
The Court held that the case carries more of cruelty in them than justice.
Celebrating Nigerian woman Nere Teriba who is building country's 1st gold refinery
Nere Teriba, a 36-year-old entrepreneur, is the youngest and first Nigerian to refine gold locally.
According to her, the refinery company ought to have been completed by February 2019 and production was set for June of the same year.
Teriba's act is focused on a sector that has been relatively untapped despite the country's huge mineral resources.
A 36-year-old entrepreneur, Nere Teriba, has broken an important record as the first and youngest Nigerian to go into local refining of gold.
In speaking with Reuters in 2018, she said the local production of gold could triple in the next five years after production.
She is the vice chairman of local firm Kian Smith Trade & Co. Teriba said that her refinery should be able to produce three tonnes of gold monthly.
It should be noted, however, that Nigeria’s diverse mineral resources are still very much untapped where they are deposited in more than 500 locals across the country.
According to her, the setting up of the refinery was to be completed by February 2019, while production should kick-start by June of this same year.
"It is a five-year expansion plan to get to 10 tonnes a month of gold. Silver will probably go up to about three tonnes a month,” she said.
Teriba said that most of the gold will be sourced from the country, there are plans to also bring in more from neighbouring countries like Ghana.

Federal high court in Lagos declared void powers of the FRSC to impose fines on motorists
John Tsoho, a judge, held that the commission could not turn itself into a court of law by punishing those who commit traffic offences.
Tope Alabi, a lawyer, had approached the court to declare that only a court of competent jurisdiction could pronounce a person guilty under section 10 (4) and 28 (2) of the FRSC Act 2007.
Other defendant in the suit was the attorney-general of the federation.
The judge also awarded N1million damages in favour of the plaintiff because officials of the FRSC had confiscated his vehicle and driver’s licence.
Tosho said while FRSC was statutorily empowered to arrest and fine traffic offenders, a closer look at the definition of the word “fine” meant a pecuniary criminal punishment or civil penalty payable to the public treasury.
“In the instant case, however, the involvement of the element of arrest takes the imposition of fine by the FRSC to the realm of criminal punishment,” he said.
“From these definitions, it is obvious that the act of sentencing is a judicial action or exercise, and imposition of fine connotes conviction for an alleged offence.
“It is, thus, very clear that the FRSC, not being a court of law, cannot impose fine, especially as it has no powers to conduct trial.
“Hence, the exercise of the statutory powers given to the defendant under the Act as pertain to imposition of fine is clearly a usurpation of judicial powers exclusively vested in the courts.
“In the circumstances, I endorse the plaintiff’s submission that by virtue of section 1(3) of the constitution, the power to impose fine conferred on FRSC by the enabling act is null and void to the extent of its inconsistency with the constitution.”
Tsoho held that the FRSC resorted to “legislative absurdity” when it imposed a fine of 3,000 on the plaintiff, rather than the N2,000 statutorily prescribed.
“FRSC’s function should not go beyond issuance of mere notices of offence,” he ruled.
“It is a cardinal principle of natural justice that no person can be condemned without being heard.
“It is in observance of this that a person alleged to have committed an offence has to respond to such allegation before a court of law during trial.”
According to the judge, the plaintiff was issued a notice of offence Sheet on April 4, 2013, but FRSC did not take him to court for five months before the plaintiff filed his suit on September 9, 2013.
“The vital question to ask is how long would it take the FRSC to reasonably commence prosecution of a traffic offence?” he asked.
“The plaintiff was not under obligation to wait indefinitely for redress due to FRSC’s inaction or laxity.
“I hold the view that the confiscation of the vehicle was unnecessary in the first place, though the FRSC spiritedly sought to justify it.”
The judge then granted 11 of the 14 reliefs sought by the plaintiff, awarding N1million in his favour instead of the N10 million prayed for.

Saudi Arabia will host the revamped
Spanish Super Cup tournament for the next three years starting January 2020, the Spanish football association (RFEF) confirmed on Monday.
“The Spanish Super Cup will be held in Saudi Arabia over the next three years and will be held in winter with the objective of easing fixture congestion, as players and clubs have been calling for,” RFEF said in a statement.

The federation declined to say how much the deal was worth but said all income earned from the new-format tournament would be reinvested in amateur football and women’s football, aside from money granted to the four competing clubs.
Barcelona were drawn to face Atletico Madrid and Valencia will take on Real Madrid in the revamped tournament between January 8 and 12.
Those games as well as the final featuring the winner of the two matches will take place at the 62,000-capacity King Abdullah Sports City stadium in Jeddah.

Nigerian women selling sex for €10 in Europe ― Special Report
Nigerian girls and women trafficked to Europe mostly between the ages of 17 to 30 have been reported to make up to 50,000 euros ($166,000) a month for their syndicate, selling sex for as little as 10 euros.
The women according to report, claimed they are made to undergo “juju” rituals before leaving Nigeria to Europe, notably Italy during which they vow to repay their transport fare to the strange land by working harder (engaging in prostitution).
The masterminds of the trafficking including a pastor have been nabbed and are currently undergoing trial. This was the latest case to highlight the growing use of Nigerian migrants as sex slaves in Europe.
Nigeria was the main country of origin of the migrants arriving across the Mediterranean to Italy in 2016 and 2017, thou the number has since dropped.
The twenty-four suspected members of the sex trafficking ring accused of forcing Nigerian women into prostitution in France went on trial Wednesday.
Many of the trafficked were women and girls lured to Europe with false promises of jobs as hairdressers or seamstresses, only to find themselves selling sex on arrival to repay their debts.
Nigerians now outnumber Chinese or Eastern European sex workers on the streets of France and some other European countries.
Last year, 15 members of a Paris-based female-led pimping ring known as the “Authentic Sisters” were sentenced to up to 11 years in prison for forcing girls into sex slavery in France.
Many were themselves former trafficking victims-turned-perpetrators.
Similar gangs have also been dismantled in Italy and Britain.
The investigation in Lyon, where police estimate half the city’s sex workers are Nigerian, began after authorities received a tip about a Nigerian pastor accused of exploiting several sex workers who lived in apartments he owned.
The pastor, Stanley Omoregie, has denied the charges, which include aggravated pimping and slavery.
But in the transcript of a conversation submitted to the court, he is heard saying he wanted “those with beautiful bodies, who can be controlled, not those that cause problems.”
The prosecution has presented him as the kingpin of a family-based syndicate made up of 10 women and 14 men, including one of Europe’s most wanted women, Jessica Edosomwan, accused of recruiting destitute women in Nigeria for the sex trade in Lyon, Nimes and Montpellier.
Edosomwan, who is believed to be on the run in the Benelux countries, Italy or Germany, will be tried in absentia.
The UN has estimated that 80 per cent of young Nigerian women arriving in Italy — their first port of call in Europe — are already in the clutches of prostitution networks, or quickly fall under their control.
The accused in Lyon cover the entire gamut of sex trafficking activities, from iron-fisted “madams” and violent pimps as well as drivers of the vans in which the women perform sexual acts, and those tasked with laundering the proceeds of the trafficking.
Prosecutors estimate that 17 alleged victims, aged 17 to 38, made up to 150,000 euros ($166,000) a month for the syndicate, selling sex for as little as 10 euros.
Most of the women come from Benin City, capital of Nigeria’s southern Edo State, a human trafficking hotbed with a long history of dispatching women and men to Europe to earn money to send back home.
Many told investigators they had taken part in “juju” or black magic rituals before leaving Nigeria, during which they promised to repay the money they owed for their passage to Europe.
Many of the woman took the perilous migrant trail across the Sahara Desert to Libya and then across the Mediterranean to Italy before winding up in Lyon.
Among the accused is a 28-year-old former prostitute who was herself released from sex slavery after paying off her debts and who in turn brought over another young woman from Nigeria.
Months of police wiretaps and surveillance led to the arrest of the suspects between September 2017 and January 2018.
They risk 10 years in jail if convicted.

Gateman, neighbor allegedly kill 26-Yr-old man for buying new car in Lagos

The incident happened on Monday, November 4, 2019, at his residence in Gbagada, Lagos State. It was gathered that the suspects, after killing Mr. Afolabi, wrapped him up with his duvet and put him in the boot of his own car.
They then drove the car to the front of Gbagada General hospital, where they dumped his corpse and drove off.
The gateman later sent his wife to Afolabi’s house to steal all the remaining valuables there.
However, the duo ran out of luck after they were flagged down at a police checkpoint in Edo State on Tuesday morning and arrested.
It was gathered that the deceased was extremely nice to the gateman and was always helping him financially.

15 rescued from Lagos torture centre, pastor arrested
A pastor, Joseph Ojo, has been arrested for allegedly using his church, the Blessing of Goodness Healing Church, Ijegun area of Lagos, as a detention centre for mentally ill persons and persons suffering from various ailments and social vices.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Ojo was arrested after 15 sick persons, who were chained inside a building on his church
premises, were rescued by men of the Lagos State Police Command, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Isheri-Osun Division, stormed the church on Wednesday following a tip-off by the National President of the Eagle Crime Awareness and Prevention Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, Samuel Adam.
When PUNCH Metro visited the Church on Thursday, four victims, some of whom were speaking incoherently, were seen chained to the ground.
Ojo, however, told our correspondent that the victims were chained because of their condition, adding that their parents brought them to the church for healing.
He said, “The people were chained because of their condition. If I did not chain them, they would run. Many of them had put me in trouble in the past and that was why I chained them. When I see that they are healed, I unchain them.
“This is not a psychiatric hospital; all of them came for prayers and they had been taken to different psychiatric hospitals before they were brought to the church for deliverance. I saw the medical papers of some of them and it was when their parents tried conventional medicine and they were not cured that they brought them here.
“We do chain them for around three to four months and it is their families that do feed them; some of their family members come every day; some weekly; and some live with their children in the church. You may think that they are healed; for instance, one of them carried a big stone and wanted to use it to break another person’s head before he was stopped.”
One of the victims, Adewale Adetona, who had been chained for eight months, alleged that he was kidnapped and brought to the church by his family, adding that he was not happy staying in the church.
The Oyo State indigene said, “One early morning, I was kidnapped from where I was sleeping and taken to the church and I was staying there until the police came to rescue everybody from the church. I am not happy staying at the church, because I have my own life to live. I am just here; I can’t live my normal life and do what I want to do.
“There was no negotiation for me to be brought here. There are unstable people in the church, so what am I doing here? I feel embarrassed being chained, but I am happy that we have been rescued; since I got here, they never removed the chains from my legs.”
Adetona’s mother, Monsurat, however, said she took her son to the church for spiritual healing, adding that his behaviour was embarrassing her in public.
“He usually misbehaves and I feel embarrassed about it. I have taken him to hospitals for healing before I heard of the church, where spiritual attacks are sorted out. But, if I told him to follow me there, he would refuse, that was why I forcefully brought him to the church in March this year and I have been seeing some improvement in his condition,” she stated.
Another victim, Solomon Ogbokri, said he was chained for eight months while supposedly being delivered of addiction to alcoholic, adding that his parents brought him to the church.
Solomon’s father, Godspower, said he took his son to the church after several attempts to wean him of alcohol and hard drug addiction proved abortive.
The 65-year-old said, “He goes about taking drugs like Indian hemp and roaming the streets; I prefer him in the church than roaming about, because he is now better. I don’t want him to go back to Ikeja, where he was taking drugs.
“I enrolled my son at the Federal Polytechni Ilaro, and another polytechnic in Ota, but he did not finish. I took him to the Fingers of God Rehabilitation Centre, the Synagogue Church of All Nations and the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Yaba, but there was no solution.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the command had commenced investigation into the case, adding that 15 victims had been rescued from the church.
“We have rescued 15 victims and arrested 11 persons, including the pastor, Joseph Ojo. Some of the victims were said to have spent five years in the detention camp. The victims are between ages 19 and 50 and some of them were brought by their families. We have commenced investigation into the matter.”
